WHO IS EVA MOON PRESS?

Based in Berkeley, California, Eva Moon Press is a letterpress printing and graphic design studio run by Julia Neises. The press name is inspired by Julia’s great-grandmother, Eva Moon Ufford who was a solo homesteader, craftswoman, loving mother, devoted wife, and life-long quilter from Alliance, Nebraska.

Formally trained in the craft of poetry, Julia now works primarily in the visual, yet still poetic, field of design and letterpress printing. These skills allow her to create a wide range of thoughtfully designed goods. Julia divides her time working as a design assistant at Olive-Route and freelancing under the name Eva Moon Press.

WHAT IS LETTERPRESS PRINTING?

In the mid-15th century, Johannes Gutenberg developed a style of relief printing using movable lead type. Over the years, this has become known as letterpress printing. Setting each letter, space, and punctuation mark of lead type by hand is tedious work, so many printers now prefer to print from metal polymer plates that are created from digital files designed on the computer. This type of printing is a combination of ink applied to the surface of a design or text, and pressed by hand or by a printing press onto paper. The result is a print where you can actually see and feel the impression in the paper. Up until the 20th century and before the advancement of digital printing, letterpress was widely used to print and distribute information. Now, the craft of letterpress printing has fallen into the hands of devoted printers who work to keep the craft alive.
